Seabee Base Gets New Commander

The Seabee base in Gulport has a new commander.

Captain Brian Kelm stepped down from the command after three years in that leadership position. The new commander is Captain William McKerall.

A traditional change of command ceremony marked the occasion and transition of leadership.

Captain Kelm is not only leaving the Seabee command, he's retiring from the Navy after more than 26 years of military service.

"And the last three years in Gulfport have been the highlight of my career. I'm just so darn proud of what's been accomplished by each of you. I'm so proud of the appearance, the operational success, the complete dedication of each member of Team Gulfport, that my buttons are popping right off," said Captain Kelm during his remarks at the Friday morning ceremony.

The new Seabee commander, Captain McKerall, is a Texas native and a graduate of Texas A-and-M University. His most recent tour of duty was as commanding officer of the 22nd Naval Construction Regiment.
