Chef Emeril Lagasse to promote Gulf Safe Mississippi seafood

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse will help promote Gulf Seafood at the 2010 Viking Classic Golf Tournament in Madison.

Lagasse and other professional chefs will prepare Gulf shrimp in the Viking Classic Culinary tent. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources' Seafood Marketing Program will provide Gulf Safe wild-caught Mississippi shrimp for the event.

In addition to providing Gulf Safe shrimp for culinary demonstrations, the Seafood Marketing team will have a table in the culinary tent where they will hand out recipe books and will be available to answer questions.

"We are very excited to be a part of this event that is so important to the State of Mississippi," said Irvin Jackson, Director of the Mississippi Seafood Marketing Program. "We're confident in this opportunity for us to showcase Mississippi Gulf seafood and prove it's not only safe to eat, it's also a high-quality product."

Participation in the tournament is another step in what Jackson calls a "show-and-tell" campaign to reverse negative perceptions about Gulf seafood. The message of the "Gulf Safe Seafood" campaign is that Gulf seafood is only harvested from open, regulated waters and is tested extensively to ensure consumers' safety.
