BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A red white and blue ribbon fell with applause to officially open Keesler Air Force Base's newest addition: The Bay Breeze Event Center. After honorary keys were passed out to staff, they welcomed in visitors for a first look.
"I think the event center is a wonderful facility for the community to use to support community programs and really showcase Keesler Air Force Base to our partners here at Biloxi in the Gulf Coast," said Commander Brig. Gen Andrew Mueller.
The new facility is the final piece of a six part building project funded with Katrina Recovery grants. The center boasts three floors, meeting rooms, lounges, a dining hall, and more. According to the base, all the amenities are targeted to encourage a sense of community.
"The community partnership for the base is really important for me as a commander because anything we do on the base impacts the community. The support we've received from the community is unbelievable and we want to continue that."
With 68,000 square feet the event center has all sorts of amenities to offer the community, but according to members on base, easy access to the golf course seems to the favorite feature.
"Having been deployed for a year I didn't get to play golf. I'm really looking forward to playing 18 holes," said Mueller.
In addition to the grand opening, Keesler is also celebrating the 63rd anniversary of the United States Air Force.
