GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Lynn Meadows Discovery Center unveiled a brand new exhibit in Gulfport Tuesday morning that promises endless entertainment for kids of all ages. "Kids Street" is South Mississippi's newest neighborhood. It consists of four homes along a quiet cul-de-sac tucked in a corner on the front lawn of Lynn Meadows Discover Center.
The elaborate playhouses were constructed just like the homes we all live in, except that many of the walls are exposed to show what's behind them. The idea is to teach children what it takes to build and maintain a home.
"You know, children are only aware of what's in their world. And in a home you see what you see. In our homes, you see everything there is to see," explains Cynthia Minton Walker, Executive Director of Lynn Meadows. "So, there are all the different types of insulation that you can learn. There's heating and air. There's plumbing that goes on. There's electrical that goes on. And so all of those areas are shown in one of these four houses, and they give some information to help them understand more about them."
The Home Builder's Association of the Mississippi Gulf Coast partnered with Lynn Meadows on the project about two years ago. At that time, it was just supposed to be a single playhouse.
Walker said, "They began to dream, and over time the dream grew. It grew from a house, to two houses, to three houses to now four. And then it became a cul-de-sac, and then it was a mini subdivision."
The Home Builder's Association donated all of the materials needed to create "Kids Street."
