GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A 55-year-old Gulfport businessman was shot to death Friday morning. It happened around 6am at a home on 5th Street, off Cowan Road.

The normally quiet neighborhood woke up Friday to the sight of crime scene tape and police cars blocking the road. Inside a modest home, Joseph Craig Jr. was dead.

"We responded here to a complaint of a shooting this morning," Police Lt. Jeff Necaise said. "Once we got on the scene, we found that we had a subject, a white male, found to be deceased on scene."

Family members waited next door as the crime scene was processed and evidence gathered. Annette Jones described her brother in glowing terms.

"The best brother that anyone could ask for.  He and I were just four years apart and best friends. He's my hero," Jones said.  "He would help anybody, give you the shirt off his back.  He died the way he lived, helping a friend."

"He was there all the time, through my childhood, through my adult life," Craig's daughter, Shelia, remembered. "For my children, he's Paw Paw. He's Paw Paw Joe. And there's a lot of kids that will be missing him, too. And those who didn't have the opportunity to meet him, you missed out. You missed out, because he's a wonderful man."
