Mayor: Pass Christian's FEMA debt is forgiven

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Despite tough budget times, there's some good financial news for Pass Christian. During Thursday's Breakfast with the Mayor event, Mayor Chipper McDermott announced that all of the city's FEMA debt has been forgiven.

He said the city still owed FEMA $3.3 million in reconstruction costs after Katrina. But after meeting several criteria, that debt has been erased.

"We got forgiven the whole nine yards. That's $3.3 million," McDermott said. "When they gave it to you, they were under meter. So the $3.3 million was actually 3.9 with interest on it. So we have gotten that forgiven. And so with that said, and I don't want to get too far into this, the people that do our books will tell you that we are probably financially better than we have ever been."

The mayor talked more about the city's budget, as well as ongoing water and sewer projects in the Pass. Click here to hear all of his comments.
