D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) – Over the last five years, the area around D'Iberville's Sangani Boulevard has exploded with new businesses and developments, but that's not the only thing. Traffic congestion has become a major issue.
"When the project came on, nobody really had a clue how quickly the traffic would catch up," said D'Iberville Community Development Director Jeff Taylor.
"Especially on the weekend, you can't get through. On a busy weekend, it's gridlock," said Paulette Stramham of Strami's Italian Cafe.
However, there is good news for shoppers and businesses like Stramham's Cafe which has watched the area, and the traffic, develop. D'Iberville will receive $2.5 million to widen Sangani from three to five lanes.
"It's going to be good for us when we get done, you know, because the traffic has really been bad lately," said Stramham who says the heavy traffic will often literally keep potential customers from her restaurant.
"The property owners and business owners have been extremely cooperative. They want us to hurry and we're hurrying as fast as we can," said Taylor.
The project will be funded through the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Although the road work has been a long time coming, it won't get started until after Christmas. According to Taylor, the construction will take six to eight months and the city wanted to avoid extra delays during the holidays.
