GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Armed Forces Retirement Home WALKWAY INFO
GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - At 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, part of U.S. Highway 90 in Gulfport will be shut down.
MDOT is closing the highway, so crews can raise the new pedestrian bridge near the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
The bridge weighs 91,000 pounds and is 156 feet long. It was designed to withstand hurricane force winds and storm surge.
MDOT says the lowest point the bridge will be to the road is 20 feet at the frontage road which is considerably higher than Highway 90.
Unlike the old structure which was restricted to retirement home residents, the new walkway will be open to the public.
Highway 90 and the frontage road will be closed in both directions from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
MDOT hopes the night work will pose less of a traffic headache to motorists. If Yates Construction finishes before 6:00 a.m., the highway could open sooner.
If traveling east, the detour route will be to take Cowan Road north to Pass Road, take a right and continue to DeBuys Road. Then, take a right onto DeBuys Road to get back onto Highway 90.
If traveling west, take DeBuys Road north to Pass Road where you'll take a left; continue to Cowan Road, and take a left onto Cowan Road to get back onto Highway 90.
Expect a similar shut down next week when the work crew will be pouring concrete for the actual walkway.
