Biloxi bridge walk to focus on women's health

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - National Women's Health and Fitness Day is Sept. 29, and Singing River Health System (SRHS) and American Heart Association (AHA) are encouraging women to take steps to improve their heart health by participating in the inaugural Bridging the Gap Between Women and Heart Disease bridge walk.

"Women don't always prioritize their own health because they're busy balancing the demands of family, work and everything else," said Becky Ginn with the American Heart Association. "Walking for just 30 minutes a day can lead to dramatic improvements in your heart health, and we hope this event will provide a jump start for women in our community who are ready to be proactive about their health."

The Bridging the Gap Bridge Walk will be from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Isle Casino parking lot. Participants can take advantage of free gifts, health information and screenings, and can register for door prizes, including a spa package from the Isle Casino.

If walkers prefer to only cross the bridge once (a one-way trip), a shuttle will be available to transport walkers back to their starting point.

The bridge walk is also a kick-off for the 2011 Go Red for Women Symposium, the annual event which provides more than 500 women from across the Coast educational and entertaining opportunities to learn more about the dangers of heart disease.

At 8 a.m. the Heart Association will introduce its Power Women and sponsors for the 2011 Go Red Symposium in February.
