FAA tops off new control tower in Gulfport

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Federal Aviation Administration topped off the new control tower at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport Wednesday morning. A crane lifted the steel structure to the top of the tower. The structure weighs almost 100,000 pounds and is 60 feet tall. All total, the new tower will stand 120 feet tall.

The new tower will replace the one built in the early 70s that is only 90 feet tall. The old tower is located on the north side of the field, while the new tower is located south of the terminal and adjacent to the new general aviation and cargo area.

Airport officials say the new tower will provide optimum visibility of the entire airfield for air traffic controllers. Officials say development, both current and in the future, is why this taller and larger tower is needed.
