GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It was a very different open house for parents at St. John Elementary in Gulfport Tuesday night. Instead of your typical back to school event, students and their parents were treated to a Black and Gold Back to Football Pep Rally.
They wanted to show support for their team, but there was another reason for the pep rally and cheers. The school is trying to win the $10,000 "Play It 60 Grant" for their school's Physical Education program.
P.E. Teacher and Coach Jared Underwood wanted to get everyone revved up for the upcoming competition.
"Thirty-four schools across America that show the most NFL team pride and demonstrate the importance of health and wellness in their school will be selected as the "NFL's Play 60 Super Schools".
Each school will get a visit from an NFL player, along with a $10,000 health and wellness grant from the NFL.
