Bay St. Louis Plant Shutting Down

Alcan Inc. today announced that it will consolidate its cable production facilities to improve the performance of its cable business. As a result, Alcan will close its Bay St. Louis, Mississippi facility by August 15, 2003, putting 116 people out of work.

"This decision is difficult, but has been made necessary by the prolonged poor market conditions and over-capacity in the cable market," stated Ian Hewett, President of Alcan Cable. "Moving forward, Alcan will focus production at its four remaining cable facilities and continue to provide high quality cable products and service to our customers." Alcan has established a severance program and an on-site out-placement center to assist employees in their transition.

Alcan Cable, based in Atlanta, Georgia, is a division of Alcan Aluminum Corporation and is recognized as the only fully integrated aluminum cable supplier in North America. Alcan is a multinational, market-driven company and a global leader in aluminum, packaging, and recycling with 2002 revenues of 12.5 billion.  Alcan employs 53,000 people and has operating facilities in 41 countries.
