Turning tar balls into jewelry

Posted: Updated:

DAUPHIN ISLAND, AL (WLOX) - You've probably heard the saying "turning trash into treasure" but this Alabama teen is taking it to a whole new level.

18-year old Jessica Boykin is turning tar balls into jewelry.

"People are like, 'I like your necklace. Where did you get it?' And I say, 'I made it.' And they are like, 'Whoa'."

Boykin and her father started collecting tar balls near their beach house on Dauphin Island.

They start by heating the tar balls in a microwave. The heat separates the oil from the sand and then it's painted onto acrylic with little charms like sea turtles and seashells.

Five stores are now selling Jessica's jewelry. She plans to use her profits to help pay for college.
