MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) – Moss Point's $850,000 street-scape project is causing traffic woes for some downtown business owners and drivers.
Orange cones and work crews crowd Main Street in Moss Point. Workers are building a new median and adding green space to spruce up the downtown district. Sonic Owner Joyce Bray says this beautification project is a nightmare.
"Last week, I was down $5,000," Bray said.
Bray blames that loss on this road work. She said construction cones are making the road extremely narrow for drivers.
"I am going to go out of business if people can't get in here to get something."
Neighbors like Phyllis Alexander and Ann Waller fear someone will get into an accident.
"People are rear-ended through here as they try to make u-turns to get to the businesses. We have a lot of elderly in our area and they wind up a little confused," Waller said.
City officials admit, this project does pose an inconvenience to drivers, but they said it's a small inconvenience compared to the long term benefits.
"It will only take a couple of months to improve the downtown area," Community Development Director Daphne Viverette said. "Those improvements will help to bring business to Moss Point that is the whole purpose and goal."
But until the work is done, Phyllis Alexander sees nothing but headaches on the horizon.
"I am all for improving the city as much as we can, but I think this was a poor choice."
City leaders counter that claim by pointing out public meetings have been held to let everybody know about Moss Point's plan to redo Main Street.
