Police: Grenade found near Ocean Springs Middle School

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Police closed the road near Ocean Springs Middle School Thursday afternoon after a grenade was found in a truck parked near the school. Police were called a little after 3pm to Old Spanish Trail because someone discovered the device in the back of a pickup truck

Officers told WLOX News, it appeared the grenade was not placed near the school intentionally. But rather, the owner accidentally left it in the vehicle. They said no one was in danger.

"We're well outside of the kill or injury zone of that hand grenade. Plus, the fact that it's contained inside of a vehicle. So we're just in a holding pattern," said Capt. Craig Douglas with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

Ocean Springs school officials said the students and staff at the middle school left safely.

The Biloxi Bomb Squad recovered the grenade and took it to a remote location to be detonated.
