BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - If you've driven through east Biloxi, you've seen the scars in the water. Damaged pilings from the old Highway 90 fishing bridge remain entrenched in Biloxi's Back Bay.
However, we have new information for fishermen who used that bridge until Hurricane Katrina ripped it apart. The city will only rebuild one of its two hurricane damaged fishing bridges. And that bridge is the one next to Highway 90.
City leaders voted on Tuesday to put a plan in motion that brings the Point Cadet bridge back to life. A city spokesman says that by investing all of the Biloxi's bridge rebuilding money on the Point Cadet project, the city will be able to build a top notch fishing spot that's ADA compliant.
The new bridge will have sidewalks on both sides. It will also have turn around bays in the middle of the bridge and the end of the bridge. That will give fire trucks the access they need to provide adequate safety along Biloxi's waterfront.
WLOX News has not been told when the fishing bridge construction will begin.
Biloxi will not rebuild the fishing bridge next to the IP casino. That concrete structure was also torn apart by Katrina.
