Son charged with homicide for mother's death

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - A man accused of killing his mother was officially charged with homicide Tuesday morning. John Armstrong had his initial appearance and preliminary hearing at Ocean Springs Hospital, where he was being treated for self inflicted wounds.

Ocean Springs police found Armstrong's mother, 80-year-old Joan Armstrong, dead in her condo at 527 Front Beach Saturday evening. Police said when they arrived at the home, Armstrong's 48-year-old son met them at the door with blood-stained clothes.

No bond was set Tuesday because Municipal Judge Matthew Mestayer determined there was a risk of flight and expressed concerns over the public's safety. Judge Mestayer also said there was enough evidence to bound the case over to a grand jury.

After the hearing, Armstrong was transported to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.

Investigators tell WLOX News Mrs. Armstrong was beaten in the head with a brick, and stabbed multiple times. An autopsy performed on Armstrong showed blunt force trauma to the head.

Police found the two weapons, a knife and a brick. Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus confirmed the findings as the cause of death.
