Jackson Co. sheriff's deputy suspended in accidental shooting

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - A Jackson County Sheriff deputy is waiting to hear how long he will be suspended for accidentally discharging a weapon inside the sheriff's department.

The shooting happened around 2 pm on Friday. Sheriff Mike Byrd says a deputy in his office picked up a gun and began examining it. The weapon belonged to Byrd. The deputy fired the gun, shattering a double pane window. The sheriff says the bullet lodged in between the building and was later recovered.

Sheriff Byrd says the deputy made an error in judgement by not clearing the weapon and assuming it was not loaded.

"It was a mistake. A good officer made a mistake," said Sheriff Byrd. "Thank God no one was hurt."

Sheriff Byrd did not identify the deputy. He says the deputy was suspended without pay. The sheriff says he will have to check his policies to determine how long the suspension will last but he believes it may be two to three days.
