GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It's one of the coolest spots around on a hot summer day. The summer heat wave is attracting large crowds at Gulf Islands Water Park in Gulfport. Families are enjoying some good times together, before the kids head back to school.
"It's hot outside. Cold water. Everybody wants to come on in and enjoy it," said water park Manager Mark Moore.
Whether floating slowly down the Lazy River or blasting down a water slide, water park crowds increase as the summer temperatures rise.
"Cools 'em off. Water's wet. Water's cold. Slides are fun. Families with lots of smiles, lots of memories. It's a great time," said Moore.
And certainly a great way to escape the early August heat wave.
"Because it's very, very hot down here in Mississippi. We're not used to this warm weather up in Washington D.C." said Lisa Arnold, who's visiting family on the coast.
"I love riding on the slides and stuff. It's really fun," said 10-year-old Paige Hooker.
Casey Waters says her kids wanted one last trip to the water park, before they head back to school.
"Oh, we just love being in the water. It's so hot outside. We love being able to swim and going on the water slides. And the children's area is great here," said the Ocean Springs mom.
For some youngsters, it's all about the slides.
"It just turns a lot and then whenever you get down, it's a big hill and you have to fall into the water," said one eight year old boy.
"I like the slide, the green slide over there. It's really fun and you like go up, down, it's real fun," added his friend.
Cooling off, splashing down or just floating along, it's a great way to spend a lazy summer afternoon.
"We're having a blast. The water is perfect. It's the perfect temperature. The girls are loving it. We're having a great time," said Lisa Arnold.
Gulf Islands Water Park is open daily through August 13. Beginning August 14, the park will be open "weekends only" including Labor Day weekend.
