BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - It's back to school time and students were gearing up for their first day. School supplies were given out Sunday by the Vernon Gilbert Elks Lodge in Biloxi. Volunteers said this is a tradition that will continue every year.

School supplies in hundreds of colors; blue, red, green and many more, were taken straight from the packaging and given out to eager students gearing up for the new school year.

Rashad Williams said, "I like to write stories and just draw."

Volunteers at the Vernon Gilbert Elks Lodge filled eight-year-old Rashad Williams' bag full of creative tools.

"Colored pencils and two tablet notebooks," said Williams.

Nell Davis who helped pass out an array of supplies said now Williams will be able to concentrate on his art and writing skills once he returns back to North Bay Elementary.

"We had tablets, we had colors, we had crayons, colored pencils, erasers and glue. You name it, we had it. Everything that they needed for school supplies," said Davis.

The Elks Lodge members prepare throughout the year to generate enough items for more than 200 students.

Davis said, "We do fundraiser's and we ask Brothers and Daughters to donate.

Davis said education is the key to success so there will be many more years of donating for the kids and their future.

"We get joy just to see the children come out and to know that our group is doing something positive helping the kids in our community," said Davis.

Williams said he is looking forward to using his brand new supplies as he works hard towards achieving the honor roll.

"I like going to school. Good grades all A's," said Williams.

This is the 12 year for the supply giveaway.
