Wife of murdered George County Sheriff named as interim

LUCEDALE, MS (WLOX) -  The widow of slain George County Sheriff Garry Welford will be sworn in on Monday as interim sheriff. The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. at the George County Courthouse.

Sheriff Welford was killed in the line of duty on July 21st. He was run over while trying to set up a road block to stop a pursuit. The two people involved in the chase are charged with capital murder.

On Friday, the Board of Supervisors appointed Debbie Welford to fill her husband's position until a special election in November.

"We felt good about the Sheriff's Department, how stable it was and the direction was is headed," said Kelly Wright, Board President. "We didn't want to put somebody in that would disrupt things. We felt she would best suited for that."

Wright says Mrs. Welford has never been a member of law enforcement but has considerable knowledge of law enforcement because she has been married to an officer for 39 years.
