Tax break holiday sees back to school shoppers

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) – It's time again to shop for back to school, and the state is giving shoppers a break to get started. The tax free holiday started Friday at midnight and lasts through Saturday.

According to Prime Outlets' general manager, back to school is one of the busier times of the year for stores.

Items you can buy tax free Friday and Saturday include clothing and shoes, under $100.  Click here to see the full list. However, stores have more than tax breaks to draw customers.

"All the stores have sales going on because they are trying to entice the customer to come in and get additional discounts. So to be able to shop tax free on Friday and Saturday is just icing on the cake," said Prime Outlets General Manager Pam Meinzinger,

The tax savings attract a variety of people, both in and out of state.  Stores have been stocking up on inventory and rearranging staff and hours to prepare for the rush. Meinzinger says these two days are a boost to the local economy.

"Nobody likes to pay taxes so it's a great time for everybody to shop.  Especially on Saturday we get a lot of out of state shoppers, and that's big benefit to our state.  Also, they don't shop just the stores that qualify but they shop the stores that don't qualify," said Meinzinger.
