BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Walmart Supercenter is one step closer to making its new home on C.T. Switzer Drive in Biloxi. Wednesday, the Duplantis Design Group, the architects charged with designing the new retail center, met with the city to look over some of the latest plans.
"We've been waiting for this for a long time," Biloxi Community Development Director Jerry Creel said. "We've worked with them through the process of putting the plan together and it looks like Duplantis Engineering did a great job of making the project work well with the site."
Creel said the area has been economically dead since Katrina, but could soon blossom if plans are approved.
"They presented a site plan to us. They did a very good job of putting together a compliance site plan, so I think you'll see very little time pass between now and the public hearing," Creel said.
Once the site plan is approved, the public hearing will be the last step before construction can begin.
"They haven't given us a time table yet, but my understanding is once they get the necessary approvals, it takes them nine months, start to finish, to construct a super Walmart."
If more than 150,000 square feet of retail is built, Creel said it could completely revitalize Biloxi's struggling west end.
"We also feel that it has re-energized interest in the mall and also in Edgewater Village. So, we potentially see a very large retail shopping area from Eisenhower to Debuys Road and from Beach Blvd to C.T. Switzer."
Creel said the city is excited and ready for the project to start. He also said there will be four entrances and exits. Two will be located on C.T. Switzer Road, one on Eisenhower Drive and one on Beach Boulevard.
