Day named new MS Power CEO; Topazi promoted to Southern Co. COO

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Mississippi Power will soon have a new CEO. Edward Day, VI, 50, will succeed Anthony Topazi as President and CEO of Mississippi Power. Day will become Mississippi Power's 11th president in its 85-year history.
Topazi, 60, has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer of Southern Company. In this new role, Topazi will have responsibility for Southern Company Generation, Southern Power and Southern Company Transmission.
Both moves are effective August 13, 2010.
Ed Day started with Southern Company in 1983 when he started as an engineer in the company's nuclear operations division. He moved up through the ranks, eventually becoming executive vice president of engineering and construction services for Southern Company Services in 2003.
Day holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama and a master of business administration from Samford University. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
The changes are part of a bigger transition for the Southern Company. Tuesday, Southern Company Chairman, President and CEO David Ratcliffe announced that he will retire December 1.
