Countdown to upcoming tax free holiday

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - There's living by mottos, then there's shopping by them.

"I just say shop and just keep shopping," said Rose Schotzberger of Gulfport.

Stores like JC Penny at Biloxi's Edgewater Mall expect to see a lot of shoppers like Rose Shotzberger filing through the doors during the sales tax holiday. It kicks off this Friday, July 30 at 12:01 a.m. and runs through midnight on Saturday, July 31.

"We're expecting to be at full capacity by about 1:00 p.m.  We want the mothers and fathers to be less stressed this year so we're really going to help them," said JC Penny Manager Christine Scarborough.

But it isn't just mothers and fathers looking to bag back-to-school bargains.

"It's grandparents sending care packages, and I'm one of them," Schotzberger said.

Grandparent Sylvia Walker was also out shopping with her grandson, Dayshawn. They were scoping the displays for shoes they might pick up next weekend, shoes they'll take home without the seven percent sales tax.

"It's good to get bargains cause we all need to save right about now," Walker said.

Store managers say holiday preps include putting associates on every register and on the floor. Workers are also using a technique called "stacking" where they set up easy to spot displays in or alongside aisles.

"All the polos, all the shorts, they're just right there on the aisle easy to find," said JC Penny Supervisor Brenda Moore.

Shoppers say making the buying experience more enjoyable will likely leave their wallets much lighter.

"I will be shopping probably the whole time. I have another care package," Shotzberger said.

Mostly clothes and shoes qualify for the sales tax holiday. Schools supplies, accessories and items worn for school sports are not included.  Visit http://www.dor.ms.gov/docs/sales_salestaxholidayguide.pdf to see a full list of items eligible for the sales tax holiday.
