Road trip leads to nationwide community service

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) – Five journalists from Florida and Georgia are on a cross country road trip, but they are doing more than hitting road side attractions.

"They added a little twist, they wanted us to do goodwill across the country and we jumped on it," said Araba Dowell of On Star. "What better way to experience each of those cities than to contribute?"

General Motors sponsored an OnStar Good Samaritan Road Trip where they challenged the journalists to trade their pens and cameras for nails and hammers during a four day road trip.

Sunday, the group stopped in Gulfport to help rebuild a Katrina damaged house.

"As journalists, we're the ones that talk about what's going on, who are aware of what's happening around our community, around other fields. So for us, this was something that we've all heard about, we know about the devastation that so many people have faced from Katrina, before Katrina, after Katrina. So for us, it was a very natural step, something that we know about, talk about and wanted to contribute to," said Kym Backer of Upscale Magazine in Atlanta.

The trip began in Atlanta and will end in San Diego where the journalists will attend the Annual National Association of Black Journalists convention. The group will make four stops for different projects.
