GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Take a song, add a dance, and you have a fun way to bring together a community.

"What our purpose and our goal is, is to unite the coast as it once was united during Katrina," said Hope Community Development Agency representative Anna Turner.

Saturday, Hope CDA held call backs for it's Phenomenal People, Phenomenal Talent competition. According to Turner, the competition showcases local talent of all ages while commemorating the five year anniversary of Katrina.

From Saturday's call backs, 23 talents were chosen:

  • 10 adult singers
  • 10 teenage singers
  • 3 dancers

The finalists will compete in the final rounds August 21-22.

Talent judge Greg Griffin said he was amazed at the range of talent displayed. He also said he couldn't pass up the opportunity to help out the program that is helping to rebuild community spirit.

"The spirit of this gulf coast runs deep, it has deep roots.  I knew it wouldn't be long before people were back on their feet and the pulse of the coast came back," said Griffin.
