BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A new Broadway favorite makes its first appearance on the Mississippi Gulf Coast at Center Stage in Biloxi. The Drowsy Chaperone is a musical comedy that won five Tony Awards on Broadway in 2006.
Center stage in Biloxi opens with its own production July 22nd, with ten performances. The Drowsy Chaperone pays homage to American musicals of the Jazz Age. It's a glamorous story about a celebrity bride and the hilarious days leading up to her wedding day. Danette Moger plays the bride. She's back on stage after taking several years off from community theatre. An opportunity to share time on stage with her daughter is what inspired her to do another show.
"It's wonderful. That was my incentive, to be on stage with her and make a memory," Moger said.
The versatile and hilarious Wayne Stephens plays an over the hill Latin lover, Adolpho. The very talented Seanie Wade-Warren plays "the drowsy chaperone."
"Her job is to chaperone the bride, but the drowsy chaperone is a code word for the drunk chaperone," Wade-Warren said. "She drinks a lot and doesn't do a very good job as a chaperone."
Mike Lacy plays the bride groom to be. He's excited to be part of what he calls a great and very funny show.
"It's very energetic, lots of singing and dancing; and the songs are tunes the audience will leave humming. We have a great director(Chuck White), musical director(Brandon Ring), and choreographer(Jennifer Krohn Densing), and a fantastic cast."
Twenty performers round out the cast; all excited to be part of a popular new show that's on the coast for the first time.
