AT&T customers experience internet, phone outages

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - If you had internet or phone problems Thursday, you were not alone. A major fiber optic cable line for AT&T was cut in Gulfport.

The cable runs along Highway 49 and controls computer terminals in Gulfport and Long Beach. Consequently, dispatchers in those cities have had serious 911 issues. Emergency calls are going to another dispatch center, and quickly being forwarded to Gulfport or Long Beach operators.

AT&T is not sure how many cell phone, DSL and landline customers are affected. The company does have crews working to repair the cable and restore service.

AT&T told WLOX they had fixed the one main fiber on Highway 49 as of 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening. Customers will come back little by little as they roll service back up. AT&T crews will still be working in the areas to re-bury the line.

They also had a second line cut by a third party around Edgewater. They have repaired it and rerouted it.
