GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) – More details are emerging about the early morning capture of the two suspects wanted in the death of George County Sheriff Garry Welford.
According to Greene County Deputy Chief Keith Churchwell, Chris Baxter and Brandy Williams were found inside a trailer near the Greene County/George County line. The 18-year-old girl was asleep. Churchwell said the 24-year-old Baxter was hiding in a closet.
Churchwell told WLOX News he heard a cough coming out of the trailer as search teams walked past it just after sunrise. A search dog sniffed the area. The power was shut off, and law enforcement teams from Greene County and the Mississippi Highway Patrol went in.
The deputy chief said the trailer was about three miles from where the pair ditched their truck Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators say Baxter and Williams were leading police on a chase in George County Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff Welford was laying down a spike strip to slow down the suspects when he was hit by the pick-up truck, reportedly driven by Williams.
WLOX News has been told the two suspects were being taken to the highway patrol office in Hattiesburg for questioning and booking. We'll have more on this breaking story throughout the day on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
