State should ban Spice - - The News for South Mississippi

State should ban Spice

We are encouraged to see a number of cities and counties along the coast take steps to ban Spice and substances like it from being sold and used. As we reported back in May local narcotics officers say the herbal incense sold with a warning not for human consumption, is actually being smoked by some people to get high. Some call it a marijuana substitute.

Unfortunately there have been reports that local hospital emergency rooms have treated individuals from having a reaction to this substance. Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said the consequences of the herbal mixture can cause someone to die.

Jackson County and all of the cities in the county have banned the sale of the herbal mixture. We urge other cities and counties along the coast to follow suit.

In fact we understand State Senator Michael Watson is proposing a bill next year in the legislature to stop the sale of it statewide. If for some reason a special session is called before the start of the year, we urge the Governor to put it on the agenda as well.

The state has moved to make it harder for Meth to be made in Mississippi and we believe the same should be done for Spice.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
