GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The search is still on for two people who hit and killed George County Sheriff Garry Welford Wednesday.
Officers from all across South Mississippi are on the lookout for Christopher Lee Baxter, 24, and Brandy Nicole Williams, 19.
Investigators believe the pair were trying to elude authorities when their truck struck the sheriff. Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said Welford was throwing out some spikes on Highway 98 near the Greene County line.
Sheriff Welford was airlifted to USA Medical Center in Mobile, where he later died.
After the accident, the female driver and her male passenger jumped out of the car and ran into the woods off Palestine Gardens Road in George County.
Lucedale Police said the two suspects, Baxter and Williams, both have criminal records. A reward of $5,000 is being offered for information leading to their capture. You can call the George County Sheriff's Office at (601) 947-4811 or the U.S. Marshall's Office at (228) 224-1008.
Officials aren't yet saying why they were trying to elude authorities in the first place.
"The case is under investigation and the individuals allegedly involved are being sought for questioning," said District Attorney Tony Lawrence. "The investigation is being handled by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Jackson, George and Greene County District Attorney's office."
