Edward Bailey's co-workers remember their friend

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Most customers probably didn't even notice, but it was not business as usual Tuesday at Best Buy in Gulfport. Associates learned that morning that the body of their long time co-worker, Edward Bailey, Jr., was found in Biloxi's Back Bay.

The 34-year-old went missing Sunday evening when he went for a swim while on a boat ride.

"I know through the strength of God that if he is gone, he's in a better place," said Marissa Crowell, Bailey's co-worker and friend.

Edward Bailey was a star in the Home Theatre section of the store, and a man described by friends as a computer and electronics whiz.  He could hook up anything and make it shine like the brightest TV screen.

Steve Moses is the store manager, and has known Bailey for a long time.

"Ed was a great person," Moses remembered. "He was probably the heartbeat of this store. He kept a lot of people together in the store, friends with everyone.  Ed was here right at five years and so he was a tremendous asset to the organization, but more than that he was a friend and peer to everyone here."

Running a business and mourning the loss of a co-worker at the same time is a tough job, but management at Best Buy has taken the steps to help their employees cope with the loss.

"Naturally our associates are fairly upset about it, very upset about it. So we have grief counselors on the premises in helping our associates in working through it," Moses said.

Back to good friend Marissa Crowell. When not helping costumers at the counter, she remembered the good times with Bailey, and the love he had for others.

"Ed was the type of person that basically anyone could talk to," Crowell said. "He loved people, the type of person that loved his family. He always talked about his sisters and his mom."

And even though Ed is gone, the fun he brought to his job and co-workers will continue to be felt up and down the Best Buy aisles for years to come.

Best Buy officials say the grief counselor will be available at the store as long as needed, while employees deal with Bailey's death.

Friends are also planning a memorial bon fire for Bailey Friday night at 10, on the beach just west of the Courthouse Road Pier in Gulfport.

Full-time Waveland city workers, primarily police officers, who take-home vehicles outside of the city limits could see a change to the city's policy soon. City leaders said the current policy is antiquated and needs to be rewritten into something that would benefit both the officers and the taxpayers.
