Paige Jones signs track scholarship with Southern Miss following her dad's footsteps

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -Kent Jones is all smiles because his daughter Paige not only excelled on the track, she also excelled in the classroom, graduating 10th in her 2010 senior class.

Paige captured the 2009 Class 3A 200 meters state championship and this past season, she placed 3rd in the 4A State 200 meters track and field finals.

Southern Miss extended a track scholarship and she signed on the dotted line.  She says hitting the books was the most important thing, "I had a full ride actually in academics to another school, but since I love track so much I took the track scholarship knowing that I could still excel in academics while I'm there."

Kent Jones added, "We're real proud of her. She's worked real hard, extremely hard actually in track and field as well as in her books."

After 31 years of covering local sports here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I would have to rate Kent Jones as the most exciting running back since I arrived at WLOX. Jones displayed quickness and the ability to glide past would be tacklers, zipping pass and through defenders, finding the end zone. Teams couldn't stop the Harrison Central scat back.

Kent says watching his daughter compete in track and field and as a member of the Pass Christian Lady Pirates basketball team, made him look back at his senior season on the football turf.  "Actually you kind of relive things through your kids. A lot of times your kids don't appear to be as stressed out as the parents, but I get real stressed out watching her," he beamed.

Paige said, "It feels good knowing that he could come and watch me and feel like he passed something on to me. I feel like I'm doing some good by him and knowing that I like the sport is even better."

Kent received a football scholarship to Mississippi Valley State.  He broke his leg and later transferred to Southern Miss and continued his football career with the Golden Eagles.

Paige Jones will be heading to Hattiesburg in August, also wearing the black and gold of Southern Miss.
