OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Melissa Johnson and her partners at South Coast Paddling Company in Ocean Springs specialize in giving visitors a view of our waterways from inside a kayak.

"This is the perfect place to paddle. The sport of kayaking is really growing," said Johnson as she loads kayaks onto a trailer.

Carl Wiedenfeld and his family from Port Arthur, TX, are renting some kayaks and heading out on an adventure.

"The kids said they wanted to try it, so here we go," said Wiedenfeld as he and his family take off from east beach in Ocean Springs.

South Mississippi's rivers, bays, bayous and even the gulf just off the beach give kayakers an opportunity to get close to nature.

"People are realizing that they are detached from the environment. They're looking for a chance to experience nature," said Johnson.

Most kayakers agree that the vessel allows them to get out on the water and forget the pressures of everyday life.

"It's totally relaxing, and I'm at peace in a kayak," Johnson said.

South Coast Paddling Company is located at 2335 Government Street in Ocean Springs.

All lanes of Highway 90 are now open. A Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman says an 18-wheeler crossed the median on Interstate 10 Thursday morning, causing a deadly series of accidents. It was just before 6:00 a.m. That truck was heading west near the Ocean Springs exit. Suddenly, it veered left, crossed the median and smashed into a motorcycle on the eastbound side of I-10. The MHP spokesman says that motorcycle driver died at the scene.

WLOX Editorial: Louisiana flood solution, not a good deal for South Mississippi

We are not strangers to flooding on the Mississippi Coast. Nor are our neighbors to the west in Louisiana. There are forever ongoing efforts, planning and discussions about how to mitigate flooding. But a recent study by the Rand Corporation is more than a little disturbing.
