BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - Some business owners say oil on the beach isn't keeping shoppers away. Second Saturday takes place each month in downtown Bay St. Louis. The event showcases local merchants usually includes live music and refreshments.

The owner of an antique shop said Second Saturday is a huge draw for tourists. With heavy publicity and high quality of merchandise, he expects that to continue despite the oil on the beach.

"There's places to eat. A variety of stores. Not just one particular type store,"said Ed Young, business owner. "We have a lot of tourists come in. People bring their friends from out of town down here. They like it. "

Young said sales at his shop are strong, but he's seen some economic downturn elsewhere.

"I would think vacation rentals are being hurt a little bit. We've had some cancellations," Young said. "But the actual retail business, I think is holding it's own down there."

Vera Lynn and Randy Sheets came over from Mobile to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

"Anything that can keep our area vital and the economy going is important in these times and spirits and enthusiasm going," said Sheet.

Second Saturday runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month.
