PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Coast children got some "super" advice on taking care of their teeth. Marques Coltson of the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints took part in a brush-a-thon with dozens of kids at the Boys and Girls Club in Pass Christian.

Colgate Palmolive runs a Bright Smiles-Bright Futures program that teaches children how to take care of their teeth.

Mississippi health officials say a survey of third graders found that three in five children in our state have tooth decay. Two in five of those children are untreated.

The Saints wide receiver said he was glad to encourage children to brush and floss.

"Events like this are just great in the community because of what they stand for," said Colston. "Colgate has done a great job with oral health. Just getting that point across to kids. Just making it fun with the activities."

"I think it helps promote good oral health," said Dr. Nicholas Mosca of the Mississippi Department of Health. "Part of disease prevention is tooth brushing and the use of fluoridated toothpaste. It's especially important in Harrison County because less than 25 percent of the population is on fluoridated drinking water in the county."

Boys and Girls Club officials say children from all the Harrison and Hancock County clubs were brought in to take part in the brush-a-thon.
