IRS opens phone line for BP oil leak victims

WASHINGTON, DC (WLOX) - The Internal Revenue Service is opening a special phone line for taxpayers affected by the BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Individuals who have questions about BP payments or who are experiencing filing or payment hardships because of the oil leak can call the IRS at 866-562-5227.

This IRS hotline will be open for calls Monday through Friday from 7 am to 10 pm.

The IRS is also planning to hold a special assistance day on July 17th in seven cities, including Gulfport, to assist oil leak victims.

The IRS plans to release the specifics on the Gulf Coast Assistance Day soon. But plans call for taxpayers and tax preparers to be able to work directly with IRS employees to resolve tax issues, including specific topics related to the oil spill.
