Gulf oil spill panel to look at root causes

New Orleans, LA (WLOX) - The National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling will convene for its first public meeting in New Orleans today. The commission will hear from Gulf Coast residents whose lives and livelihoods have been impacted by the BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

The commission will use the information gathered at this two day public meeting to make an independent determination of what went wrong with the Deepwater Horizon.

President Barack Obama appointed the commission to not only to determine what happened, but also, to develop recommendations on how to prevent a disaster of this magnitude from happening again. The commission is also tasked with finding ways to mitigate the impact of any future spills that might result from offshore drilling.

Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway is schedule to speak at the commission meeting in New Orleans on Tuesday on the impact of the BP oil leak on his city.

Former two-term Florida Governor and former U.S. Senator Bob Graham and former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency William K. Reilly are the co-chairs of the commission.
