GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Senator Roger Wicker was in South Mississippi on Thursday looking at clean up efforts and assessing damage from the oil disaster in the Gulf. Wicker went to Waveland where oil has penetrated fragile marshes.

"This is where frustration turns into anguish," said Wicker.

The Senator is convinced that BP cut corners at the Deepwater Horizon well.

"It's clear they're guilty of gross negligence. They took short cuts. It turns out they have a history of taking short cuts."

Senator Wicker also questions operations at the well site where hundreds of millions of gallons of oil have been leaking into the Gulf of Mexico for 80 days now.

"If they had enough booms and skimmers, there's no reason why oil was able to get into the Mississippi Sound," said Wicker.

Wicker said he has introduced legislation in the Senate designed to help off set economic damages from the crisis.

"It speaks to the loss of revenue by state governments in the region. It also allows for tax breaks for small businesses and provides incentives for job creation and hiring displaced workers." Wicker said.
