Police warn of oil cleanup related fundraisers

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Be careful about giving money to organizations that say they're helping clean our shoreline.

Ocean Springs Police say they've received a number of complaints about people asking for cash donations to help with the oil spill cleanup.

Investigators said the solicitors say the money will go to non-profit organizations, and ask for checking account information, social security numbers, as well as cash.

But police say that no such organizations are currently permitted in the City of Ocean Springs to lawfully do such soliciting. And anyone asking for such personal, financial information should be carefully scrutinized.
