Laurent's girlfriend testifies about trip before wife was found

HATTIESBURG, MS (WLOX) - A crime scene investigator told jurors Tuesday that Brandi Laurent could not have been killed in the way her husband described to authorities.

Prosecutors showed a tape of Leo Laurent as he lead investigators through the trailer where his wife, Brandi, died. Laurent described how he and his wife were arguing over her wanting to go out.

In the tape, Leo said Brandi got a gun and the two were struggling when it accidentally went off. In the tape, he said he panicked, and was worried the police would think he was on drugs, because his wife was on drugs. He put her body into a garbage can on wheels, rolled her out to the van, and took her to the area where her body was later found.

Crime Scene Investigator Grant Grahm testified that based on the bullet trajectory, it wasn't possible that the gun was fired the way Leo Laurent described.

Prosecutors called five witnesses to testify Tuesday, including a woman Laurent started dating shortly after his wife disappeared. Kimberly Cooley said she and Laurent had planned a trip to Cancun. Laurent paid for the week long excursion scheduled for September 2007, but he didn't go. It was a week before Brandi Laurent's body was found by a search team. Cooley testified that Leo Laurent told her, "It would look bad, if I wasn't here."

Brandi Laurent's body was discovered 100 days after she went missing. The woman who found her buried in the shallow grave was among those who testified Tuesday, along with Brandi's mother and Hancock County sheriff's investigator Andre Fizer.

The court recessed around 3pm. The state will continue to present evidence Wednesday morning around 9am.
