Rain slowing oil cleanup in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Dozens of oil cleanup workers battled heavy rains Tuesday morning as they try to rid the shoreline of oil and tar balls. Close to 30 workers fanned out across Lake Mars Landing scrubbing oil residue from rocks and using absorbent "pon-poms" to pick up oil from the water and marshes.

Since Sunday, when the first oil appeared on Jackson County's shoreline, officials say crews have picked up more than 3,000 pounds of tar balls and oil material.

Once the oil is picked up, it goes to the contractor's base camp in Jackson County to be disposed of later.

BP officials on site say the rain is slowing cleanup efforts at Lake Mars and Belle Fountain Beach, where oil continues washing up, fouling the rocks and sand. The work will continue throughout the day as weather permits.

Patrice Clark will update the cleanup efforts in Jackson County later on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
