Oil, tar balls spotted on north side of Deer Island

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – WLOX News has confirmed that oil and tar balls have been spotted on the north side of Deer Island. That news came to us from Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran. She spent much of Sunday meeting with elected leaders, the Coast Guard and the DMR, trying to understand what's being done to protect the shoreline.

Since that meeting, booms near Davis Bayou have been closed. And the mayor said at least three boats fitted with skimming equipment have been working out near Deer Island, to clean any oil sitting on the water.

Ocean Springs aldermen have asked that all fabric fencing purchased for the city be deployed. And they ordered all booms lining the city's shoreline be closed.

Bellefontaine Beach, Lake Mars Landing and a section of Pascagoula's beach are other locations where officials say oil has washed ashore today.
