BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A large patch of oil has entered the Mississippi Sound in an area south of Biloxi and Gulfport and there's much more headed this way.

Trudy Fisher the director of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality told WLOX News aerial surveillance Thursday identified nine areas in the Sound. Fisher says there is "more of the same material behind it. It runs for several miles."

Around the barrier islands there is oil sheen, tar balls, oil mousse and emulsified oil. BP has sent two skimmer boats to east Ship Island and Horn Island Pass, in an effort more oil from getting into the Sound. Photos taken from the air show areas of orange mousse close to shore at Horn & Petit Bois Islands.

"The State DEQ and DMR have been voicing concerns all day, making sure BP and the Coast Guard are throwing everything at it possible," Fisher told WLOX News.

Fisher will have the latest on the oil and efforts to stop it live on WLOX News at six.
