Oil clean-up continues in the Mississippi Sound

JACKSON, MS (AP) - Authorities say crews have cleaned up a large patch of oil in the Mississippi Sound, the fertile waters between the state's barrier islands and mainland. Cortnee Ferguson, a joint information center spokeswoman in Mobile, Alabama, said "a mat of floating tar balls" was found in the Sound on Wednesday. Mississippi officials described it as a mousse-like slick.

Ferguson says some tar balls hit East Ship and Petit Bois islands. She says vessels on Thursday removed the oil from the water near Dog Keys Pass and workers were dispatched to clean the islands. Mississippi has been relatively spared by the massive Gulf oil leak when compared to neighboring states, but the tourism and shrimping industries have still taken a hit.
