Possible oil mousse patches found near barrier islands
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - New patches of possible oil "mousse" have been spotted in the Mississippi Sound.
Dr. Bill Walker of the Department of Marine Resources confirmed that a "fairly large patch of mousse like material" was spotted in the pass between Horn and Ship Island. The patch was reportedly a mile long and has been reported to incident command. The actual location is just a little north of the east end of Ship Island in an area known as Dog Keys Pass.
Dr. Walker says a suspicious area of orange mousse was also found Wednesday about 11 miles south of Petit Bois Island and also five miles south of Petit Bois.
According to Walker, the sea currents are apparently moving back to the west, bringing this oil back toward Mississippi.
These discoveries come a day after the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality reported that suspicious substance found in St. Louis Bay Sunday was not oil, but algae.
