Powdered milk brings out bomb squad

By WLOX Staff

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - Bay St. Louis authorities called in the bomb squad Monday evening to investigate a suspicious powder found at a house fire on Bookter Street.  The Bay St. Louis Police and Fire Departments responded to the fire call a little after 5 p.m. and quickly extinguished a small fire inside the home.

Once the fire was out police discovered a container with a powdery substance.   Police told WLOX News the cardboard container was about the size of a five gallon bucket and had some kind of strap around it.  The homeowner told police the substance was powdered milk.  However, police said they weren't taking any chances, so they evacuated the homes next door and called the bomb squad from Biloxi.

A supervisor from the Biloxi Police Department Bomb Squad arrived a little before 7 p.m.  After retrieving the container, police said the powder was in fact powdered milk.

No one was injured and the damage to the home appeared to be relatively minor.
