PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - They produce 5.5 million gallons of oil every single day in Pascagoula. The Jackson County Refinery, which is one of the top 10 refineries in the U.S., employs more than 1,600 South Mississippians.

They say being good neighbors and putting safety first is their goal. We introduce you to the Pascagoula refinery's new General Manager Tom Kovar.

"We've got to be the best to survive in this difficult, difficult business," Kovar said.

Made even more difficult by the Gulf oil crisis. Chevron's new General Manager Tom Kovar came to the Pascagoula refinery a month ago. He says the Deepwater Horizon Explosion will effect his entire industry for many years to come.

"I imagine we'll see enhanced regulations; you've already seen a moratorium on drilling."

He also said he's certainly not an expert on offshore drilling but believes most tragic events such as this could be avoided.

"Inside our gate in our refinery when we have events, and we investigate them. We try to learn from them and grow, and we believe they are preventable."

Although the Chevron refinery has no involvement whatsoever in the BP spill, they have leant a hand trying to protect the place they call home.

Kovar told WLOX News, "Our company has offered a lot of technical expertise and equipment to help in the response, and we've provided significant resources along the Gulf Coast for a lot of non-profits to help with the response and clean up."

The new man in charge of Pascagoula's Chevron refinery said they will continue to do what they do best, while always putting safety first.

"In my business, our goal is to keep running the refinery as safely and reliably as we can and that really needs to be our focus."

Tom Kovar comes to South Mississippi from the Chevron Pembroke Refinery. He has lived and worked around the world in his 32 year career with Chevron.
