Biloxi hires contractors to prepare for oil clean up

BILOXI (WLOX) - The city of Biloxi is taking a lesson from Katrina and getting ready in case the oil hits our beaches. The city is advertising for contractors to hire for possible oil clean up.

Mayor A.J. Holloway said he's confident in BP's ability to step in and clean up but having contractors ready to go puts him a little more at ease.

"If BP doesn't come and start cleaning up along with who ever else is suppose to do it, then we will go in and do it. It's just a back up so to speak." Holloway said.

The idea came from a similar model in which the city hired independent workers to help after Katrina, instead of depending solely on the Federal Government.

The city is also working to protect its beaches by putting up booms on the inlet drains and in the sensitive marshes. Holloway counts his blessings Biloxi has not yet been hit, but says they have to be prepared.

"We're counting and have all the confidence in the world that BP will stand behind it and do what they're suppose to do and do it right and that we won't have to use this," the mayor said.
